needed to reset default profile for this to work

  1. after following the steps 3 times and having it fail, i found i had to re-assign the default profile for my old data to show up: help>more troubleshooting information>profile folder, open folder check the name of the default profile on old machine and select the profile with that file name as new default.

embarrassed to say how long it took me to figure out would be really nice if that were explained!

  2. How did you do that? I have 4 files in my profiles folder. Three are labeled .default; one is .default-release. I have replaced all the files in the .default-release folder with the data from the actual folder that was being used (based on date). Still I am prompted to set up a new profile and no old ones show up.

  3. yeah, for some reason the new installation sets default to nil.

to reiterate, first on the old machine follow the steps above to see which of the folders you are actually using as default (i suppose if you don't have access you can just go by trial and error).

on the new machine reset the default profile to that file name...and i forgot how i did it :(

try one of these approaches with thunderbird open https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-thunderbird-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager with thunderbird closed https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-thunderbird-profiles#w_start-the-profile-manager-when-thunderbird-is-closed

good luck, sorry i don't remember all the steps
